A Flower Still Blooms on a Rainy Day

Once, an ambassador from the Byzantine emperor came to the Prophet ﷺ with a message. During the course of their conversation, the Prophet ﷺ began to explain lslam's principles to the man, and eventually offered for him to accept it. But the man politely refused, saying, "I follow the religion of the nation on whose behalf I came to you. I will not change my religion until I go return to them.”

In response, the Prophet ﷺ simply chuckled and recited the Qur'ānic verse, “Surely, you do not guide those whom you love, rather God grants guidance to whomever wants it; and He knows better about the guided ones.(1)

This reaction to having his message refused was one of nobility; not only did his light mood put the Byzantine ambassador at ease in what could easily have been a rather tense situation - reassuring him that his rejection of Islām would bear no immediate consequences but the Prophet ﷺ also made it clear with his choice of verse that his attitude toward the Christian ambassador was yet one of love. If only modern callers to Islām took this single lesson from the Prophet's ﷺ life!

No matter what the environmental conditions are, a flower always blooms and spreads fragrance and beauty - as if it learnt its qualities from Prophet Muhammed ﷺ.
