A teacher has to have many qualities in himself, and patience is one of them. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ had all of them with the most perfect balance. If someone starts enumerating them he can easily pile up voluminous content on the same.

Out of many traits, a genuine teacher is the one who retains good temperament while giving instructions. Once, Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hakam al-Sulaimi ؓ was praying in congregation, and of course Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was leading the prayers. During the salah, someone sneezed and Sayyiduna Muawiyah ؓ responded to the sneeze. At that time, few others started looking at him, in order to indicate that he shouldn’t have responded in prayers. Not getting it, Sayyiduna Muawiyah ؓ replied verbally to them and said: “What have I done?” in order to defend himself.

Subsequently, everyone in the congregation started hitting their thighs, indicating that this should be ended, and that they’re all in prayers. After the prayer had concluded, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ came to this companion and said: “It is not permissible to speak while praying, rather one must recite only from the Quran and remember Allah.” That is all what the Prophet ﷺ said – with a humble and friendly voice.

Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hakam al-Sulaimi ؓ later recounted this incident and said: “May my father and mother be his ransom, I have never seen a better teacher than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By God, he neither hit me, nor insulted me, nor even spoke rudely to me.”
